Our specialty camps are designed around a basic theme just as our immersion learning programs are, but these programs are more recreational in nature. While focusing on a particular area of interest, children can take their knowledge levels to new heights. The main difference between these camps and the immersion learning camps is the lack of historical content. Children still pursue interests, but without assuming the role of a historical figure, or acting out a historical time period. Specialty camps scheduled for the 2008 season are listed below:
Sports Camp:
Do you like basketball or soccer? Have you ever wanted to play volleyball or baseball? Or maybe karate or swimming appeals to you more? Or what about archery, fishing or boating? All these things are sports, and all are fun. If you are looking for a way for your children to have a great week of learning new skills and meeting new friends, this is the week for you. Whether your children are already skilled in these sports or merely just beginning…whether aspiring athletes or in it just for fun, this is a week for them. Through rotational schedules, the campers will learn all these sports and more. If a particular fondness for one particular game develops, rest-assured they will have ample opportunity to hone their new skills during one our many free sessions designed for that purpose. Who knows, you may discover that your child has a talent you never knew they had!
Outdoor Living Skills:
Outdoor living skills are far too overlooked in today’s fast-paced world. But yet these are still important skills to learn, even today. These skills enhance emergency response abilities, build character, and foster cooperation, patience and resourcefulness as well. In addition, team building and group leadership skills are also developed in this program. Children will learn how to build shelters, find and prepare edible foods, locate resources, conserve, and respect the environment. Even if these skills are never needed, you can sleep better at night knowing your children have acquired them, and they will gain a sense of empowerment as a result of this unique experience.
Art Camp:
DaVinci, Degas, and more. A focus on great artists of the western world and their contributions to society. Guided by our resident artist, Nancy Palmer, children will learn to create works of art using the methods of these famous masters. There will also be an investigation and exploration of naturalistic artists and their creations. If your child is in need of a creative spark, or simply just has a love of art, this is the week for them!
Camp Explore:
Has your child expressed an interest in learning about a particular subject in depth? During this exploratory week, the kids will learn about all of the subjects and activities offered at Camp Otto and some additional mini units such as Geology and animal life. They will then be able to choose whatever activities they enjoy the most to explore in more depth. Some of the activities offered during this exciting week are:
